Reconquista Española

The Reconquista is the period in the history of the Iberian Peninsula of approximately 780 years between the Umayyad conquest of Hispania in 711 and the fall of the Nasrid kingdom of Granada in 1492 to the expanding Christian kingdoms: this complete conquest of Granada marks the end of the period. The beginning of the Reconquista is marked with the Battle of Covadonga (718 or 722), the first known victory of Christian military forces in the Iberian Peninsula since the military intervention of the combined Arab-Berber forces of 711. After 1492 the entire peninsula was controlled by Christian rulers. The Reconquista was followed by the Edict of Granada (1492) which expelled Jews from Castile and Aragon who did not convert to Christianity, and a series of edicts (1499-1526) which forced conversions of Muslims in Spain, and in 1609-1610, his exile.
