Windmills
They played a prominent role in the economy of some areas of La Mancha throughout the early modern period, but they remained a mere alternative to the watermill, which was then considered the mill par excellence, as repeatedly demonstrated by written sources from the period. The false impression that, in La Mancha, windmills competed with watermills on a regional scale is due not only to the fame the former gained thanks to Don Quixote's celebrated adventure against the would-be giants, but also to the fact that, due to their location on hills adjacent to population centers, windmills were always much more visible than watermills, and eventually became protagonists of the landscape.
Don Quixote of La Mancha
The windmill of La Mancha was transformed into a universal literary symbol by the genius of Cervantes, and enshrined as such by many later authors. This not only transformed these inventions into one of the main identifying elements of La Mancha, but also ensured the survival of a good number of them to this day.
