The Cromwell tank was developed during World War II by the British Army to replace the aging Crusader in the "cruiser tank" role. The Cromwell was characterized by its high speed, which could exceed 60 km/h, and excellent maneuverability. Although its speed was often limited to prevent excessive wear on the tank's mechanical components, particularly its suspension, it was balanced by decent armor and good armament. The 75 mm main gun mounted in the turret was powerful enough in engagements against similar armored vehicles and could use the same ammunition as other Allied tanks, such as the American Sherman. Furthermore, the Cromwell played an effective close support role for infantry.
